SECOND COMING, feature film, directed by debbie tucker green, produced by Hillbilly Films. Starring Nadine Marshall and Idris Elba.
Second Coming was a sensitive piece of contemporary drama to design, exploring the aesthetics of seasons and time passing. The family house of Jax & Mark was the main set on location in SW London and we built the ‘raining’ bathroom at Wimbledon Studios. The lookbook was our department’s starting point and I was greatly influenced by the work of artists Alex Kanevsky and Lynette Yiadom Boakye and the dot technique employed by Chris Ofili. I also discovered the work of Brazilian artist & photographer Geraldo de Barros whose elegant lightness in his image-making was in many ways connected to the subtlety we had to find in the design of the story.
The house we hired to film in was a completely white, blank space so adding colour was important. I employed a splatter technique using a mix of colours to give each character’s space a subtle identity and a palette that would morph according to the colour temperature of the light during day and night.
And the bathroom that rains….
